There were some great artists at the Detroit Fanfare this weekend. These were just a few of what the ones that really stood out.

Kurt Einhaus | http://kurteinhausart.com/fantasy-painting/

Michael Calandra | http://www.calandrastudio.com/Calandra_Studio.html

Dave Aikins | http://daveaikins.com/

Dave is an interesting character, I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Motorcity Comic-con in May, this time I came prepared. Dave does the artwork for both Zombies and for Many of the Nickelodeon books such as Dora, Diego, SpongeBob and Backyardagins. So while I got my Zombies game box personalized with some cool zombie art, Xander got a few of his favorite books signed as well.

Jeremy Bastian | http://jeremybastian.blogspot.com/ Jeremy was one of the Artist for The Guild Tink one shot comic; he did the Tink tall tale story piece. Of course I had him sign the comic for me.

Diana Harlan Stein | http://www.naiadstudios.com/
Diana did a great transformer character for Xander, this is a photo of a copy, but check it out.

Here are a few pictures of the latest project. This is a very rare Monorail Terminal that can be used with the Old Crow monorail system. Perfect for Battletech! It took me two years to get a hold of one of these things and I am extremely thrilled with how its turning out. I’ve made some modifications such as adding platforms, steps, doors and of course adding the old crow tracks.

If you are interested in purchasing one of these amazing Monorail Terminals you can contact Blanche (Tba0075_NOSPAM@aol.com). *Be sure to remove _NOSPAM from the email address before emailing (I put it there to stop spam bots).

Update: Still 37 in queue, they are at 17 sent..as of Oct 19th, 2011 (yep in over a year). blah. Will do an unveiling when/if it ever comes.

Its official, I got the confirmation that I am number 37 in the queue for what could easily be the most Epic miniature ever made (Although I’m not sure miniature is the correct term for it, as this thing is a beast! ).

The Dragon, sculpted by Andy Foster at Heresy Miniatures is on the horizon. No word yet on when it will be ready to be shipped, they are still in the mold making processes.  Once that part is done, they will let me know the shipping costs and soon enough I will be painting the obvious centerpiece of my collection.

I just got a new Digital Concepts Ps-101 Portable Lighting Studio; good for photographing small items; from Amazon.

This thing is really cool and it’s pretty inexpensive. It came with lights and a nice little backdrop. It should allow me get some great photos of the products I want to photograph and review.

The soft light that is produced from the sides of the studio against the light helps to cut down on shadows in the pictures allowing for closer and more detailed photos.

Here’s the latest pictures of the Xmarx Hanger project, It’s still very much a work in progress. The final product will probably change quite a bit as I experiment with new techniques,  this is the largest model I’ve painted  so far and I’ve found that many of the techniques I typically use on smaller structures and Battlemechs need to be adjusted for larger surfaces such as the walls / floor of the hanger.

Really, figuring out how you want the model to look even before your brush hits the paint is the hardest part.  My ideas evolve as I go, and I find myself completely revamping the model… Guess that’s the problem with being a perfectionist.  It will work out in the end however =) So at this point I am still not sure if I want the model to have windows making it more of a city type structure, this would allow it to match my other sci-fi type buildings.  Another option would be to make the hanger to a more fortified structure, filling in the walls with some dark gray or even blackish areas, or I could paint them a specific color based on the clan/house I plan to decal it with.  It’s probably going to be House Kurita, so maybe red? Hmm, I may even do one side windows, the other fortified, which could give me more options for photographing and realistic scenarios.

Another decision that I need to make is how to paint the interior.  Do I want it a clean / new hanger, or do I want a used and dirty look.  I am playing with used and dirty right now, maybe I will buy another which I can paint to be more of a clean, new building.  It’s going to require a lot more coats of paint to get this thing looking how I want it, but it’s coming along.

The outside of the Hanger will need some weathering as well. I have some decals from fighting piranha graphics on the way, and I have some decal paper so I can print a larger logo for the roof. I also picked up some Micro Kristal Klear to test out; I’ve read that it can be used for realistic windows so I am going to test it out on some other pieces to see what it can do before I put it on this model.

In other news, I just got a new set of Winsor Newton Series 7 brushes for my birthday so I should be able to up the quality of the painting a bit. Also I may be getting an airbrush for Christmas, that should be a huge help on larger models such as the Hanger,  I don’t have any experience with airbrushes yet, but  after some online research I’ve concluded that the Paasche Model VL Double Action Airbrush may be ideal for my projects. If anyone has any advice on airbrushes it would be greatly appreciated. I will review both the brushes and Airbrush as I have more experience with them.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Hanger to come soon.  I graduate in December so painting / blogging time should increase.

At first I was a little leery about getting buildings that were not made with resin or pewter, but this stuff is actually really cool.

According to JR; “Drystone is a polymer modified cement for casting detail parts.  Drystone is durable and chip resistant and has a PSI of 10,000 as compared to plaster which only has a PSI of 2,000.  When painting DO NOT wash and using a primer is not necessary”

I actually washed mine, I’m not sure what the negative consequences of that will be, but they seem to be ok for now. I found that this stuff works great for modifying and adding bullet holes, scrapes, cracks and other textures.  A simple pin vice with drill bit can be used to easily add these extra details in minutes.  After that I used Citadel Washes to add detail effects.  Devlan Mud helped to create a dirty look, Baal Red was used for blood stains (in case I decide to use the pieces for an 6mm zombie attack), Badab Black for weathering, bringing out cracks and bullet/explosion holes, and Thraka green for foliage.  Actually, aside from a couple of grey basecoats and the yellow road lines on the bridges, these Drystone pieces are painted entirely from the four inks.

I made the House Kurita decals myself with some decal paper and a normal everyday printer.  I think they turned out nice, but I’m considering printing them on a clear background, the print did not hold well and I’m not sure I like the white background showing through on the logos.

The pieces in this image are all from JR Minatures:
#2028 Terra Bridge
#1370 Heavy Weapons Blockhouse 3ea
#1399 6 Story Destroyed Bldg
#1772 Assorted Trees 12pc

I really love these pieces; I think they turned out very well.  I will probably pick up some more Drystone products later on.

I watched the premiere of The Walking Dead last night; It seems like it’s going to be a great series.  It started out a little slow, but once it gets going, full on zombie action! Gotta love that.

This isn’t so much of a review as it is an observation.  The show was great, but it really made me think. Why is it that the protagonist never realizes what’s going on without an explanation?  Hasn’t the zombie genre been around long enough? Shouldn’t everyone know by now that when the dead walk you need to arm yourself to the teeth and get the hell away from anything that was once a heavy populated area? Dealing with the undead shouldn’t be such a mystery nowadays; any protagonist should have at least some basic zombie survival knowledge.  I guess this could really fall into most genres if you think about it.  It’s all just common sense really, if aliens attack, don’t sit under the ship holding welcome signs;  if giant ground digging creatures are out to eat you, stay the hell off the ground; and if zombies are looking to make you a midnight snack, shoot first, ask questions later.

I really enjoy zombie horror, but I must admit that I have anxiety about the whole thing.  I do have my loosely based plan in the event of an actual zombie outbreak; secure the family, get guns, food, water and medical supplies.  I often evaluate structures for their safety value against zombies, I’m sure to check for large  windows that could not be boarded easily,  as well as weak doors or hidden areas which could allow that pesky half bodied zombie a way to sneak in unnoticed.  You have to look out for these things,  I mean one slip up and the whole plan falls apart.  You really can never be too careful when dealing with zombies.

The Walking Dead was very good, it had a great start, it kept me interested and kept me wanting more. If you like the zombie genre I think you will like it, they really don’t hold back, you get the full on gore you would expect from the best (or worse depending on which end you are on) of zombie attacks.

It’s been a while since I posted, this final sememster of college has been a difficult one.  However there is a light at the end of the tunnel, its almost over, soon I can have my extra time back to focus on my family and of course my hobbies.

For now, I wait anxiously for the end of the semester which will hopefully coenside with the delievery of what looks to be the most amazing model I have ever seen.  If you have not seen this yet I highly recommend checkign it out, this model has been a work in progress for years, but it looks like its finally ready to be casted and shipped.

The Heresy Dragon has been on my lookout list for a couple of years, it is finally just about ready to go and the pictures look amazing.

This Dragon is certaintly not inexpensive, according to the Heresy site this thing will probably run  around £100 or more depending on the final production cost.  I’ve got my pre-order in, the quality and detail on this thing is phanominal.

Expect a review and pictures as I build this thing.
